Hotel Hilbert
Infinitely many rooms. Every single one is taken. Somehow, there’s always space.
It’s the night shift at the Grand Hotel Hilbert, which has a room for every whole number: 1, 2, 3, and on forever. Tonight it’s fully booked, and guests keep arriving. You can’t build new rooms. You can’t turn anyone away. All you have is the PA system.
Rule 1One guest per room. No sharing.
Rule 2Every guest needs a real room number. No room 0, no room 1½.
Rule 3Nobody sleeps on the street.
Based on the thought experiment David Hilbert used in a 1924 lecture, later popularized by George Gamow in One Two Three… Infinity (1947). A Paradigms piece by Melisa Machuret. Drag the scene to look down the corridor.
